The Easiest Raised Garden Beds To Construct

A friend of mine mentioned that she wanted to build a raised garden bed for a small vegetable garden she was planting this spring. I began searching raised garden beds to learn how difficult this would be since I was sure she would enlist my aid in constructing this structure. I found many websites describing how to construct a raised garden bed and it did not seem too difficult. Simply put, you decide where to place the raised garden bed, remove all grass and other debris from the area, build a box around the garden and then fill it with soil. However, I was not impressed with how these do-it-yourself raised gardens looked from the pictures that accompanied the online how-to guides, so I did some more research on the subject of constructing raised garden beds.

A raised garden bed does provide many advantages over a full size vegetable garden. The raised gardens are good for smaller vegetable gardens that will only cover a few feet in area. Raised garden beds can provide healthy soil for vegetable gardens in areas where it would be too costly to repair soil that is not suitable for growing a vegetable garden. Weed growth is inhibited because the raised garden is sitting on a foundation of garden matting making the control of weeds much easier. In addition, raised garden beds make gardening much easier for individuals who may have difficulty bending, stooping and kneeling because raised garden beds provide easier access to the garden. Raised garden beds also inhibit encroachment into the garden by your lawn, protect the plants from damage from lawnmowers, and weed eaters.

One advantage to having a raised garden bed that is often overlooked is the beauty that it can add to your yard. Raised garden beds can be as detailed or as plain and simple as your mind can imagine. I found many great articles online about how to construct a raised garden bed as I said before but I also found something even more spectacular - - pre-made materials that you can purchase to construct a beautiful raised garden bed. For the average person like me, constructing a raised garden bed would require some effort but could be accomplished; however, it would be a very simple bed constructed of 2 x 4 wood boards and would not be very appealing as far as curb appeal is concerned. With a little help from your local retailers, everyone can construct a raised garden bed that is both functional and beautiful.

Can I build (and plant vegetables in) a raised garden bed near the well for my house?
I've recently moved into a house that has a well system to provide water. I want to build raised garden beds for a vegetable garden, but the only place in the yard that gets consistent sunlight is near where the well is in the yard. I would by no means plant completely around the well or too near the well to prevent work done on it, but the beds would be about three feet away from the well itself. None of the plants I intend to grow would have a root system that would reach the well and I do not intend to use fertilizers or pesticides. Is it safe to do this? I live in Florida, on a barrier island, so the well is probably not more than 30 feet below the surface.

OPINION; Generation Sell

13 Nov 2011 at 12:00am  EVER since I moved three years ago to Portland, Ore., that hotbed of all things hipster, I've been trying to get a handle on today's youth culture. The style is easy enough to describe -- the skinny pants, the retro hats, the wall-to-wall tattoos. But style is superficial. The question is, what's underneath? What idea of life? What stance with...
