How To Care For Your Lawn In Winter
As winter approaches, many people put away their lawn mower and gardening tools. Taking care of the lawn when snow is approaching is probably the last thing on their minds. Winterizing the pool and bringing in the patio furniture is just the start to winter chores. Caring for your lawn in the winter is not a hard job, but most lawns do require some winter upkeep. To begin winterizing your lawn, you will begin in the fall. When mowing the lawn, it is a good idea to gradually lower the blade height on your mower. This cuts the grass closer to the ground and heads off any new growth. New growth is the first part of the grass to become damaged in a freeze. Mowing your lawn close to the ground helps to protect the grass from breakage. This process of almost shaving the lawn will also decrease the chances of your grass becoming brittle and dried. No one wants a yard full of hay at the end of the fall. You can also remove all lawn equipment, toys and other yard ornaments from the grass during the winter. Anything that rests on the lawn will cause the area beneath it to smother. When spring comes around, you will have brown spots in the yard where ever the ornaments were placed. Between the snow and the cold, the lawn has enough danger without adding any extra! Putting away the lawn and gardening tools also means that you will have them handy when the spring comes. Moving any heavy furniture, like picnic tables or kiddie pools will also save the grass beneath them. Any covered area is susceptible to rot during the winter months. Aerating and fertilizing before the first hard freeze is another excellent way to improve the look of your lawn during the spring. Since the winter will cause your grass to become dormant, a good feeding prior to the winter helps it rebound. Several commercial fertilizers are made just for winterizing your lawn. Servicing your mower and making a plan for spring is also a great way to continue lawn maintenance during the winter. Since you will not need your mower for a few months, this is a good time to have a professional service it completely. Changing the blades and changing the oil will get your mower in tip-top shape for the spring. Although winter lawn care is not as strenuous as summer lawn care, it is still very important. That last round of fertilizing will be stored by your grass for use in the spring. The protection that you provided your grass, by trimming it tightly toward the ground, will also make it much stronger in the coming year. By SonyShadi -
