UC San Diego Survey: Green Jobs Earn Higher Salaries, Promotion Prospects

A recent study by the University of California at San Diego, which was performed in conjunction with the publication Sustainability: The Journal of Record, revealed some significant and intriguing findings with regard to not only the average salary of employment situations termed as "green jobs, " but also with the ability of the employees in said jobs to progress upwards in company administrations.

The results of the study indicated that forty-three percent of survey respondents, who were termed "sustainability professionals" by in a PRNewswire press release issued to the public today, earned an average salary of $75, 000 dollars a year, and even more in some cases. As well, the piece published by PRNewswire reports that the majority of survey participants, which amounts to roughly 62 percent, "said that their job does have promotion potential, and most would recommend sustainability as a career to t heir children."

PRNewswire also reports that the scope of the survey was extensive, and that the academics who designed the study were able to include a total of 366 "U.S.-based sustainability professionals" in a variety of workplaces, including nonprofits, corporations, and an array of government agencies. The survey was conducted in the fall of 2009 and the winter of 2010, and as well as appearing in Sustainability: The Journal of Record, the results also appeared in Prospectus, a magazine which is published by the University of California at San Diego Extension.

The editor of Sustainability: The Journal of Record, Lori Tripoli, offered some insight into the significance and suggestions of the comprehensive study.

"High-end salaries aren't just limited to those working in large cities, where the cost of living is likely to be higher than that in more remote areas, " Tripoli said. She continued, "Interestingly, almost as many of those at the upper end of the salary echelon work in suburbs as in large cities with populations of one million or more."

The survey also indicates that professionals in what it terms "top income tiers, " who make more than $75, 000 dollars per year, have often pursued graduate education or advanced degrees of some kind. Notably, twenty percent of all those surveys received an annual salary of between $100, 000 dollars and $149, 000 dollars.

But age doesn't seem to be a separating factor in regard to who's making more money in green industries. "Although some perceive sustainability as a 'youthful' profession given its relatively recent emergence as a career track and its emphasis on improving the planet for future generations, respondents were in all age ranges, " PRNewswire reports Henry DeVries, assistant dean for UC San Diego Extension, as saying. "That said, about two out of three respondents in our study had less than three years of sustainability experience."
