Worm Composting

Worm composting is real simple to do. More farmers are using this method. It is not all that bad. You can do this too. The main use of worm composting is to then turn the food that you have not eaten into a compost that will condition the earth where you are trying to grow things. This has started in British Columbia, but more farmers are using this because of all the benefits that stem from this.

The one benefit is it proves great for indoors and outdoors. So if you are looking for compost that is year round, then Worm Composting is the way to go. This makes those who live in apartments very happy as they can use this since it is made for indoors.

How does this work? All you have to do is, take red worms and place them in a container with bedding. You just add the food that you have not used into the container. Be sure that you bury the food. What they do is then turn the food into compost that you can use. This does take a bit of time though, so you have to be patient. It can take up to four months. The best type of container for this is a wooden container as it is more suitable for the worms.

While we say to use red worms, you can use other worms as well. Farmers have found that there are actually two great types of worms that work well for this project. Red worms are just one of them. The other type is known as manure worms. You can find the manure worms in horse manure. If you cannot find any that way, you can always buy some. In order to know how many worms you need, just remember this ratio. You need about two pounds of worms for every one pound of food. The best things to feed these worms are: egg shells, vegetable peels, and tea bags. After two and a half months, you then have the compost you have been waiting for. When you are finished, be sure that you then take the worms out, because if you don't, the worms will die.

You recycle the compost that cannot be used and end up throwing it away when you do this method. Think of how much you are benefiting the earth by doing this. Not only are you getting something that you can use, but you are also getting something that will help clean up the earth in which we live in. Give it a shot and see what grows with the compost that you get. The benefits are great and very rewarding for everyone involved.

Will my cat's flea medicine kill the worms in my worm bin?
Ok, so I use revolution on my cat to kill fleas, worms, etc. I keep my worm composting bin inside because it's winter and they would freeze outside. The revolution is basically supposed to kill any parasites that live in the house, and I was wondering if this will hurt my worms. They are red wigglers. ALSO, my cat has cardboard scratching posts and I am always tempted to throw the little cardboard bits into the worm bin, but I'm not sure if that would hurt them with the flea medicine. Really, it's the second question I really want an answer for. Does anyone have experience with this?

Has anyone done a business plan for worm composting?
I'm doing a project in one of my classes. I'm having trouble figuring out what the direct costs are for compost, worm casting, and worm tea . Most of the materials (as far a I can understand) are depreciated. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate your input. Furthermore, if you own a compost business I would like to know the general amount of startup costs (just to make sure I'm on the right track). Thanks.
